A Nation of readers from birth:

Announcing the 2007 moonbeam Children's book awards

Quote of the Month:

"There is no reason good can't triumph over evil,
If only angels will get organized along the lines of the mafia."

- Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007), frontspiece to Man Without a Country, his last published book. His birthday would have been this Veteran's Day, Nov. 11. Vonnegut was a survivor of the fire-bombing of Dresden in WWII and went on to write one of the most important anti-war books of all time, Slaughterhouse Five.

Poem of the Month:

We Real Cool

THE POOL PLAYERS.
SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVEL.

We real cool. We
Left school. We

Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We

Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We

Jazz June. We
Die soon.

- by Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000)

Pre-Holiday Greetings,

The above poem was a favorite of Harold Washington, mayor of Chicago from 1983 to 1987, and for whom the central public library building of Chicago is named. I learned more about Washington while conducting our first annual Moonbeam Children's Book Awards presentation event at the Harold Washington Library Center -- the largest public library building in the world, with over 70 miles of book shelving. The story of the city's first black mayor is compelling, especially in light of the current run for the presidency by Barrack Obama. Washington's victory was a turning point in Chicago politics, an over-turning of the "Daley Machine," helped by a campaign that registered 100,000 new black voters prior to the election; it also inspired the young Obama to move to Chicago in 1985 and get involved in public issues. Obama's presidential bid now signals a big turning point in U.S. national politics, that of a black candidate with a realistic chance to be elected President.

Washington inspired Obama, and Obama is undoubtedly inspiring thousands of young people with his charisma and youthful enthusiasm (not to mention his race). As Obama says in his bestselling autobiography, The Audacity of Hope, it requires boldness and audacity to believe you can make things better than they are today, rather than succumbing to cynicism or hopelessness. The future of the planet may well depend on our children taking that audacious step into hopefullness, and the books they read play a huge part in making that happen. We hope our Moonbeam Awards inspire readers and buyers to check out the winning books, we hope kids will read them and be inspired by them, and we hope the award-winning authors, illustrators and publishers are inspired to do more great work!

This month's issue of Independent Publisher Online includes results of the Moonbeam Children's Book Awards with a full listing of gold, silver and bronze medalists, and some photos from the event. Columnist Nina L. Diamond was busy this month, first with a profile of Moonbeam Award-winner, Nachshon Press, gold medalist in the Young Adult Non-Fiction category with Homeland: The Illustrated History of the State of Israel. Presented in a unique, fully-illustrated graphic format, the book begins with the biblical Abraham and goes right up to the present. “Every country’s lands have changed hands many times," says author Marv Wolfmann, a prolific comics author who also wrote The D.C. Universe. "The world is always in flux. You hope that everyone living in the land can eventually find peace and work together. The rest is politics and power, which are the same thing.”

In her Much Ado About Publishing column, Nina gives us her take on the Writer's Guild strike, with her column, What if Authors Went on Strike? "What kind of books," she speculates, "would editors, publishers, sales execs, distributors, and other non-writing publishing industry humans (and sub-humans) write in our place?" Nina also delivers her Annual Holiday Parody, sure to get you into the "Christmahanukwanzukah" spirit.

In this month's How's Your Publishing Game? column, Fern Reiss offers some timely advice on How to Publicize Your Children's Book. "Do a bookstore demonstration instead of a reading," she writes. "If your book features an acrobat, design a gymnastics event; maybe you could even organize a gymnastics marathon as a charity event. If your book involves a child who cooks, put together a kids’ cooking demonstration. If you have a book about animals, consider organizing a petting zoo."

Publishers Lunch/Publishers Marketplace
http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/
Publishersmarketplace.com is celebrating its sixth anniversary with the launch of a cool new Top Dealmakers tool. (The new feature creates about 180 lists of agents, editors, agencies and imprints, covering each of the different deal sub-categories, and gathers "detail" pages of transactions for all of those different players.)

In the last year other new additions have included the Top Reviewers tool; Publishers Lunch TV at BEA; a custom publishing search engine; and company pages/micro-sites for Little, Brown and BEA.

Meanwhile, all the existing features and databases that members rely on continue to grow. Here are a few stats on what the site offers:

- 27,368 deals from over 7 years
- 45,035 reviews from major newspapers, from over 5 years
- 23,375 representation records
- 1,431 editions of Publishers Lunch, and now Lunch Weekly too, archived (and searchable) going back to January 2002
- 60 different bestseller lists compiled every week, from 14 sources, going back over 4 years, comprising about 250,000 individual records
- over 1,300 member web pages and blogs, including about 320 pages from literary agents/agencies alone.

Our intent is to keep you informed....
